What does it take to turn challenges into achievements and goals into realities? For Whitecap, 2024 was a year that answered this question in many ways. From record-breaking growth and groundbreaking AI projects, to forging deeper connections with our clients and team, this journey has been about more than numbers; it’s been about impact, innovation, and resilience. I must admit I enjoy looking back at the end of a year to reflect on the lessons, hardships and achievements. And this year was especially insightful, setting the stage for even bigger things to come.
2024 brought growth and learning on many levels both for the business and for me personally. At the beginning of the year, during our all-employee meeting, I shared my vision for 2024 as a year of growth and profitability, outlining the strategies to achieve it. I’m pleased to say that Whitecap delivered on our goals beyond what I envisioned.
However, to my surprise, this success came with challenges that tested the limits of our team and me personally. I hadn’t fully anticipated how the complexities of rapid growth would stretch us, but they did. However, thanks to the unwavering dedication of our team and the trust of our clients, we embraced these challenges head-on and overcame them together as a team, achieving record-breaking results along the way.
The progress we’ve made is remarkable. We’ve seen notable revenue growth and expanded our client base with recognizable names like Sick Kids Foundation, Park ‘N Fly, Universities Canada, The Dairy Farmers of Ontario, QPS Evaluation Services and Speakers Spotlight, to name a few. But it’s the stories behind the numbers that matter most. Our team has tackled projects that pushed boundaries, often requiring intricate integrations and creative problem-solving including leveraging new technologies and working with new team members. These weren’t just projects to us; they were opportunities to make a meaningful impact on our clients’ businesses while inspiring and motivating our team through challenging and rewarding work. That’s what this journey is all about for us.
2024 – The Year of AI
This year, artificial intelligence dominated the conversation. For many clients, AI represented exciting opportunities to streamline processes, gain insights, and create meaningful value for their businesses. However, the path to adopting AI wasn’t always clear. Much of our work this year focused on guiding clients both new and existing through understanding how to start with AI, where it fits into their business, and how to approach it thoughtfully.
Watching our team help clients navigate this journey was inspiring. Across different industries, our projects reinforced how impactful AI can be when approached with care and purpose. Yet, there is still room for improvement. Canada, as a whole, has some catching up to do in fostering innovation and supporting smaller businesses in adopting advanced technologies like AI.
Addressing this challenge requires a collective effort from industries and government. My hope is that more will be done provincially and federally to support Canadian businesses in 2025 and beyond.
A more strategic approach to AI implementation is one of our top trend predictions for 2025. Take a look at the 2025 tech and software development trends as we see it.
A Personal Journey of Growth
As president, my personal journey this year was about growth and balancing the company’s expansion without compromising quality or overburdening our team. I won’t sugarcoat it, it wasn’t easy, but it really helped me to understand the importance of collaborative leadership. By consistently involving my team in the decision-making process, I not only strengthened our relationships and buy in, but also harnessed their collective knowledge and expertise to make the best decisions for the company.
A quote by Michael Dell, a past leader, resonated with me: “Try never to be the smartest person in the room. And if you are, I suggest you invite smarter people… or find a different room.” This wisdom helped guide me as I took on the role of president at Whitecap for my second year. I have had many sleepless nights trying to figure out the right balance of people, skills, talent and cultural fit. This year taught me that whether your business is navigating hard economic times or experiencing explosive growth, it’s never simple and there will always be challenges to overcome.
I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to navigate this exciting yet demanding rapid growth. It’s a much more desirable position than facing stagnation or decline. Thankfully I have several mentors to guide me on my journey. These accomplished people are my sounding board, consultants for ideas and strategies, they help me find clarity and provide the council needed to make the best decisions. If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone, it would be to find someone you thoroughly trust, admire and look up to and use them to your advantage. Their insights will help you formulate and validate your ideas both good and bad.
Looking Ahead
As I look to the future, I am optimistic and really excited about what lies ahead. Our focus remains on continuing to grow, supporting our clients, and building a company where our team can thrive. The coming year will undoubtedly bring new challenges and opportunities, but I am confident we’ll face them with the same dedication and creativity that brought us this far.
To all our clients thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you’ve been with us for 20 years or joined us recently, your trust and confidence have been the pillars of our growth. Supporting your journey as our own has been a privilege and seeing it all come together has been deeply rewarding.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, may the New Year bring you growth, success, and endless opportunities!
